Module 2: AI to enhance students' english skills
Exploring Artificial Intelligence to enhance students' english skills
Introduction
Module 2 drew my attention to the power of Artificial Intelligence in improving students' English skills. At first, I was eager to discover how these tools could improve fundamental activities such as reading, listening, writing, and speaking. I knew there were many resources online, but I never imagined there were so many.
This module radically changed my perspective, revealing that AI not only saves time in lesson preparation but completely transforms the learning experience, making it more engaging, personalized, and interactive for students. In short, this module opened my eyes to exciting new possibilities for integrating AI into my future lessons, sparking numerous ideas I'm eager to implement.
What were the most important concepts you learned?
For the second module, I was impressed by how Artificial Intelligence is a catalyst for students to learn English more effectively. It improves their reading and listening skills (the ones that "receive" information!), and even their writing and speaking skills (the ones that "produce" it!).
I explored tools like podcasts, which are great for listening; Grammarly, which is like having a personal editor for writing; and QuillBot, which gives you a boost when paraphrasing. This truly is personalized learning, since not everyone learns in the same way and at the same speed.
I also discovered AI notebooks and bots; these tools can guide and support students even when we're not in the classroom. I realized that AI not only makes life easier for teachers, but it can also help students become more independent in their learning.
Isn't it amazing how technology opens so many doors for us?
How did these concepts challenge your previous understanding of English language teaching?
Before embarking on this course, and particularly this module, my understanding of pedagogical tools and English teaching was considerably limited. Honestly, language teaching was limited, in my understanding, to strict adherence to a curriculum guide, grammar explanations through repetitive examples, and memorization and repetition.
While I was familiar with certain digital tools such as PowerPoint and Canva, the discovery of Artificial Intelligence has relegated these to the background.
This module has allowed me to grasp the transformative potential of AI. By observing how students can engage in authentic conversations with a bot or how their writing skills can be refined with AI-powered tools, I was able to understand the depth of its impact. It is essential to recognize that each tool has a specific purpose, and the key lies in properly selecting the tool that best suits our pedagogical needs.
-- Possible challenges --
Challenge: Content accuracy and relevance
Solution: Remember that AI tools are just that: tools. Therefore, it is up to the user to use them correctly.
Challenge: Overdependence
Solution: Raise awareness among students while developing problem-solving skills.
How do you plan to apply these concepts in your future teaching?
From now on, my teaching approach will focus on maximizing the teaching/learning process. To achieve this, I plan to use the personalized teaching tools I have explored in this course.
Primarily, I'm thinking about incorporating chatbots. These could facilitate the practice of structured dialogues and simulations of real-life situations without the pressures of a direct conversation with another person.
For writing, the use of AI tools such as advanced grammar checkers and writing assistants (e.g., Grammarly, QuillBot) is planned. These tools would not only help improve accuracy and fluency but would also encourage self-revision.
Additionally, AI offers the ability to personalize each student's learning path. This would involve adapting teaching materials and activities according to their proficiency level and individual needs. For example, students with listening comprehension weaknesses could access adapted listening resources, while others could focus on specific grammar or vocabulary exercises.
Conclusion and key learnings:
Module 2 of this course has been instrumental in redefining our understanding of English language teaching through Artificial Intelligence (AI). Previously, language pedagogy was perceived as a more traditional process, centered on curriculum guides, repetition, and memorization. However, this module has revealed a much more dynamic and effective landscape.
AI has relegated more conventional digital tools (such as PowerPoint or Canva) to the background by demonstrating its ability to offer more immersive and effective learning experiences.
In short, Artificial Intelligence is emerging as a fundamental ally in transforming English language teaching, making the process more interactive, personalized, and empowering for both teachers and students.
